And it’s hard to imagine a position more consistent with OA than that of the Pirate Party, with its focus on “the sharing of knowledge, ideas and culture” (as stated in the manifesto) and its commitment to the provision of infrastructure for this. Academic OA and the Pirate Party are a match made in heaven; it’s an arena in which much has already been achieved, but in which a truly optimal system is yet to emerge.

On Saturday 27 April 2013 Pirate history was made and three members of a national Pirate Party were elected to be representatives in their national parliament.

Iceland is the first country to have Pirates having a say in the running of their country. It was a nail biting finish as the voting results changed through the night and the Icelandic Pirates swung from initial ecstasy to despair and disbelief and then to consternation as the numbers we being reported differently by the two main news outlets MBL and RÚV.

Long after the victory party ended the Pirates left the Reykjavik Cafe with no certain result. It later became known that PPIS had attained 5.1% of the vote and gained the three so called “leveling seats” that are allocated on a national basis at the end of counting according to Torrentfreak.

That is now the official result and the Icelandic Pirates have let out a collective sight of relief and some caught some sleep while others partied on or got down to preparing for the next stage.

Pirate Party Wins Three Seats in Iceland:

On Saturday, Iceland held national parliamentary elections and the newly-formed Pirate Party of Iceland won 5.1 percent of the vote. This earned the party three seats in parliament, making the new Píratar the most successful Pirate Party in any national legislative body around the globe.

Iceland’s unicameral parliament, known in Icelandic as the Alþing (“All-thing”), has just 63 members to represent the country’s 320,000 people.

Iceland’s Pirate Party has won parliamentary representation for the first time in Iceland by landing three seats in the Icelandic Parliament. Founded primarily in a bid to promote reform of the country’s copyright and open content laws, the Pirate Party has attained the mandatory 5% vote and will be forming part of Iceland’s 63-member parliament, the Althing (Alþing).

The past 12 months have seen an unprecedented flurry of Internet-related legislation and furious opposition—so much so, it’s difficult to keep a sense of perspective. Here’s a quick recap of the four most contested pieces of legislation that have riled up Internet users.

SOPA

What it is: The Stop Online Piracy Act, a.k.a. SOPA, is a copyright-enforcement bill introduced to the House of Representatives. It was heavily associated with the Hollywood lobbying group the Motion Picture Association of America.

What’s the problem: Under it, courts could instruct Internet service providers to block users
from visiting websites accused of even linking to copyrighted materials.

PIPA

What it is: The Protect IP Act, a.k.a. PIPA, was introduced in the Senate and was seen largely as a sister bill to SOPA.

What’s the problem: Under PIPA, any site that facilitates copyright infringement was subject to domain name system blocking—meaning that they’d appear in users’ browsers to simply not exist.

ACTA

What it is: The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, aka ACTA, isn’t a bill—it’s a trade agreement between a number of countries to work together to enforce copyright online. Theoretically, ACTA is a means for countries around the world to agree on the same standards for copyright enforcement. Though originally introduced only to address physical counterfeits, it’s since been reworded to include any online copyright infringement, too. The U.S. signed it without much fanfare before the SOPA and PIPA protests, but the European Union hasn’t voted on it yet. It’s currently hotly debated in Europe.

What’s the problem: According to some interpretations, ACTA could give ISPs around the world the right to scan users’ Internet usage for potential copyright infringement.

CISPA

What it is: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act, aka CISPA, is a security bill designed to help federal agencies defend American property from foreign hackers. Under CISPA, any company can immediately share otherwise private user information with federal agencies if it could help combat one of four cyber threats. It passed a House vote Thursday and is currently awaiting vote on the Senate floor.

What’s the problem: Critics say the government shouldn’t ever have such easy access to private user data.

An early copy of The Avengers actually leaked out onto the internet a week ahead of release, and Disney was subsequently flipping out about the prospect of the full film being released on the web. Shortly after, the camcorder version had been downloaded a half million times, likely a record for the format.

However, despite setting piracy records, all that’s really happened is that this has shown how much illegal downloads of in-theater movies really does noteffect box office tallies. Even if you’re using the skewed math that says every download is a lost sale, the pirates would only make up 0.5% of the revenues of the film so far.

Of course, that’s not the case, and anyone passionate enough about The Avengers to download it a week early more than likely had a desire to see on the big screen as well.

…we live in a new era since the global adoption of the internet, and with that comes new freedoms and abilities that should be taken advantage of, not criminalized. yes, with freedom comes responsibility, but that responsibility should entail recognizing the sharing of knowledge and ideas not as a theft but as a human right.

After a week or so, I realised that when I talked to anti pirates, they did not give me any answers. They were all doom and gloom and talked about how good it used to be in the good old days. The pirates gave me answers, albeit not always the ones I wanted. I asked how I would be able to control my work, and they said: “You can’t. You never could.” I asked how I would make money in a world were my work was available free online, and they said: “You have to find new ways.” But they said other things as well. When they talked about the future they talked about wonderful possibilities. The anti pirates talked with grim voices, the pirates spoke with voices filled with hope and creativity.
